What is an innovation classroom
An innovation classroom is a space in the school designed for active learning: inquiry, hands-on work, creating and teamwork. What sets it apart from a regular classroom is not the furniture but what happens in it. Instead of the teacher explaining while thirty students listen, the students do, and the teacher guides.
Most innovation classrooms combine flexible furniture, group work areas, and technology that makes possible what a regular classroom cannot, such as experiments in virtual reality headsets.
Four zones of an innovation classroom
It helps to think of the room as four zones, which can share one space. The graphic shows them, each with its own role in the lesson:
Inquiry zone
Experiments and labs in VR headsets
Collaboration zone
Tables for group work and discussion
Making zone
Building, design and problem solving
Presentation zone
A screen or wall for sharing results
How to set up an innovation classroom, step by step
- Start with the goal. Which subjects and grades, and what students should gain: inquiry, teamwork, digital skills.
- Choose the space. A fixed room, or a flexible space that changes with the lesson. Standalone VR headsets need no computer room: they charge in a cart and go to any class.
- Choose content before equipment. Headsets without learning content stay in the cupboard. Decide first what students will do with them.
- Train the staff. A teacher who feels confident with the tools is what turns a room into an innovation classroom.
- Start small and measure. One class, one lesson, then expand based on what worked.
Where proLabsXR fits in
proLabsXR brings the inquiry zone into the innovation classroom: six virtual science labs on Meta Quest headsets, learning games in every subject in Parkland, and a teacher portal showing what every student is doing. The whole class enters the same world together, and every student does the work.
